John Marks, III

John R. Marks, lll, former Mayor of Tallahassee, FL (2003-2014), serves as the vice president of government and community affairs for BNC. He is also the managing principal in the law firm of Marks and Marks, LLC. The firm focuses its practice on inter-governmental relations, utility regulation, telecommunications, internet and media technology.

Marks served eight years on the Florida Public Service Commission (1979-1987) and is the Founder and Chairman of the Board of the Jane and John Marks Foundation (JJMF). Currently, Marks is Vice President for Government and Community Relations for the Black News Channel (BNC). BNC is a 24 hour, seven days a week, worldwide network located in Tallahassee, Florida devoted to providing culturally identifiable news, information and education with an African- American perspective

Marks was among the first African Americans to attend Florida State University where he received his B.S. degree in 1969 (Business Administration) and J.D. degree in 1972 (Law) from FSU. Marks has been recognized as one of FSU’s 100 Distinguished Graduates, inducted in the FSU Alumni Circle of Gold, the FSU Presidents Club and the Florida A&M University’s College of Education Gallery of Distinction. Marks was a board member,Vice Chairman and general
counsel for FBMC Benefits Management Company (35 years), a graduate of Class XX of Leadership Florida and is currently on the Board of Trustees for the Collins Institute at FSU. He is a US Air Force Vietnam era veteran (1972-1976) serving as a Judge Advocate (Captain). In 2017 Marks was designated a FSU Air Force ROTC distinguished graduate and in 2018 inducted into the State of Florida Military Hall of Fame. He is a member of the Sigma Pi Phi Boule’ and a life member of the NAACP, the National Bar Association and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Marks professional memberships include the American, National, Florida, Tallahassee Bar and Barristers Associations, and the American Law Institute.
He is married to Jane A. Marks, a psychotherapist, television personality and certified Zumba instructor.
