Jim Zerwekh serves as Black News Channel’s chief operating officer. Jim is a prominent senior media executive with strong leadership and communication skills. He has an excellent track record of managing and optimizing large-scale operations for broadcast stations and cable television networks while improving ratings and profitability. During his career he has managed and mentored people in all aspects of television, radio and digital media.
In 2018 Jim was appointed to the board of directors, and serves as the chief operating officer, of The Black News Channel, LLC. BNC is an innovative and life-changing network whose mission is to provide intelligent programming that is informative, educational, entertaining, inspiring and empowering to the African American audience.
Jim formed Veritas Media Advisors, LLC, a media strategy, consulting and investment firm in 2017. He continues to serve as chief executive officer and president. The firm’s clients include broadcast TV stations and groups, radio stations, cable and digital content providers as well as professional sports teams.
In 2010 Jim became the vice president and general manager of WTEV and WAWS-TV, Jacksonville, Florida. In 2012 he was retained by Cox Media Group to become the vice president and general manager of what is now WFOX-TV and WJAX-TV. Jim was responsible for the brand and call letter changes to both stations which resulted in record revenue market share and ratings growth from #3 to #1 in key newscast time periods.
Prior to joining WAWS and WTEV Jim founded the Foxtail Group, a Denver, Colorado based media operations and consulting firm.
Jim joined Tribune Broadcasting in 1988 as director of programming and executive producer of sports and special programming at WGN-TV Chicago and national WGN Superstation. As executive producer, he was awarded twelve Emmy Awards for outstanding achievement in programming and production. During his 20-year career with Tribune, Jim also served as vice president and station manager of WGN-TV, vice president and general manager of WSFL-TV, Miami as well as vice president and general manager of KWGN-TV, Denver. Prior to joining Tribune, Jim served as the program director for KMSP-TV, Minneapolis.
Jim started his broadcasting career in Peoria, Illinois at WEEK-TV where he served in various news, production, sales and programming roles. He also worked for WIRL / WSWT Radio in Peoria as a newscaster and announcer.
Jim has served on the board of directors of the Florida Association of Broadcasters, the broadcast advisory board of the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the board of directors of Rocky Mountain Junior Achievement and was also the television vice president of the Illinois Broadcasters Association. He and his wife, Sharon, currently support the efforts of Dental Needs For All, a non-profit organization founded by their daughter, Katie, which assists those in need of dental care.
Jim earned a bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, from Illinois State University.
